An Update

I have some bad news and some good news.

First, the bad news: After some stagnation and deliberation, I have decided to stop publishing the Book Review column. Thanks to everyone who took the time to read the few articles that were published. I'm very grateful that I had the opportunity.

Now, the good news: I'm starting Trivial Matters, a quiz column on the most important unimportant things you can research about. It's very simple: In every issue, I will present you with a question on an arbitrary topic. Find the answer before everyone else, and you'll be getting a nice and shiny Gold Coin as a reward. Awesome, isn't it?

Well, that's it for now. Get your brain juices flowing, your Google-fu going, and I'll see you in my spankin' new column!

Trivial Matters: Welcome

Selamat Hari Raya! The release of this issue of the Newsie concides with the festival of Hari Raya, so for the first edition of Trivial Matters, here's a question on the festival.

Hari Raya marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. It also marks the beginning of the month of celebration that comes after Ramadan. Here's the question: What is the month of celebration called, in the Islamic calendar?'

Send me a PM with your answer. If you're the first with the correct answer, you'll earn yourself a Gold Coin!

It's Foodilicious: Hari Raya Special Edition
Hey readers, before we kick start the 8th issue of It’s Foodilicious!, I would like to wish my Muslim friends Selamat Hari Raya! And now, let’s start off our Hari Raya Special Edition of It’s Foodilicious!

It was actually quite tough to find something that I actually liked, especially when it came to Malay food, considering the fact that I haven't ventured into that field yet. However, my efforts were not wasted when I stumbled upon this quaint stall selling a traditional Malay food, the staple of them all – Mee Rebus. Chinese people who don't possess a liking for spicy food might not be familiar with it - and boy, was this dish spicy. It was indeed a little weird to be the only non-Malay to line up, but it was all worth it, after trying out the warm bowl of Mee Rebus.

This Mee Rebus stall was the first to capture my attention, and since I was on a mission for Malay delicacies, I went there to take a look without any hesitation. I was quite intrigued when I saw the signboard that was displayed prominently above the stall. There were 2 lines, which I thought were humorous:

Taste Good ----- Tell Your Friends, Taste Bad ----- Tell Us!

This phrase alone, convinced me to buy a bowl of Mee Rebus from this stall. The queue moved exceptionally fast, as I had initially expected a long wait. As I inched closer and closer to the counter, my stomach had already started rumbling. The owner was quite friendly, and also told me that his Mee Rebus was dubbed “Power” Mee Rebus, because the blend of spices reminisce the smell and taste of the traditional Mee Rebus cooked in the olden days. When I took the first spoonful, guess what word immediately came to my mind? Shiok.

The generous dollops of the thick, creamy sauce was the base for the vast amounts of flavours that were contained in the dish. The yellow mee had this exceptional resemblance the noodle that's used in Japanese ramen. My favourite part of the dish was definitely the thick and creamy sauce. The explosion of flavours in your mouth makes you want to order another bowl of the rich sauce alone! That's how good it was. Now, I shall let the pictures do the talking.

My rating: 3.5/5 stars

Price: Bowl of “Power” Mee Rebus = S$3.00

Find this superb dish at:

With that, we have come to the end of the 8th issue of It's Foodilicious!, and I hope that my dear readers have enjoyed and look forward to future issues! Till next week!

It's Foodilicious: Food Trivia

I am introducing this brand new trivia section about food, so you, as a reader, can stand a chance to win prizes such as GL Credits, or maybe even Habbo Coins! So basically, this trivia section will be broken down into two parts, which will be explained below.

1. The good ole trivia. Each week, a Foodilicious Trivia Of The Week will be posted and one to three winners will be picked from the pool of correct answers to win either Habbo Coins or Great La Credits, depending on the week.

2. The second part is where YOU come in! Readers will be invited to send in their trivia questions, and if yours gets picked, you will stand to win Habbo Coins or Great La Coins! Isn't that just exciting?

As with any contest, there are rules that you will have to adhere to.

THE RULES
- Originality. All submissions are to be the work of the submitter. Plagiarism is strictly forbidden and any submissions found to be plagiarised will be disqualified immediately.
- Relevance. It's Foodilicious is a weekly food column. Please, don't send trivia based on cars or your favourite toy! Only food-themed trivia will be considered.
- Length. We are not looking for essays. Although we are flexible, please keep your ramblings to the minimum. A trivia that explains everything in three sentences would be great.

And now, with all that business done, here's the Foodilicious Trivia Of The Week!

What is the sweetest fruit that can be found on Earth? (Hint: it's not often consumed by us)

The two fastest correct entries will win themselves a Silver Coin each! And if you choose to submit your question for the second part of the trivia, you'll stand to win a Silver Coin too! We're basically giving away free money, so what are you waiting for?! You can PM me by hitting the Contact the author button at the bottom of this article.

All the best!

This Week's Tips and Tricks on Food!
Superfoods, line up!

(zzzzz….) Huh? Wait, what? Oh sorry! I was just sleeping resting my eyes! I am truly sorry for the 2 week hiatus. But, I'm here now, and ready to entertain you guys! This week, I'll reveal some foods that can significantly boost your health in as little time as possible, and how, you ask? Superfoods, of course. And we'll start with the basic ingredients to get your health back in shape. And as we all know, Hari Raya is getting close, so read on to see how you can make up for all that fasting!

Lettuce
It is one of the lowest kilojoule (kJ) foods available, well, at least in your fridge. It has zero fat and fills your hungry tummy up with very little effort. With just 10kJ of energy in lettuce, it is an ideal filler for sandwiches and salads, and it's a great base for other healthy foods, such as chicken breast and avocado.

Asparagus
Three medium spears of asparagus contain about 38kJ, which is good news for you health-conscious calorie counters. Health benefits include vitamins C and E, dietary fibre and folate. Asparagus is also considered a natural aphrodisiac. With less than 15kJ per spear, maintaining an asparagus diet is a great way to lose weight. Try blanching asparagus with olive oil, add it to pasta or wrap it with some extra lean bacon for a delicious snack or just simply stir-fry it for a quick bite.

Broccoli
Broccoli, the little... tree... thingy, is extremely low in calories, containing 34 calories per 100g and is incredibly rich in nutrients. As it is very low in carbohydrates, low in starch. Broccoli is a great food to eat if you're embarking on a weight-loss plan and is an ideal addition to noodles, salads and pasta. The phyto-chemicals and the idoles found in broccoli have an important role to play in cancer prevention. Studies have shown and proved that it also decreases the risk of macular degeneration and helps the detoxification processes in the liver.

And... yeah, this comes to the end of part one of this 3 part article. But trust me, these tips really do work! Hope you guys have been good (at least food-wise) while I was gone! And I take this opportunity to wish our fellow Great La members who celebrate Hari Raya, a very Selamat Hari Raya! Till next week, ciao!

Your resident foodie,
Lucas
